Phishing Attack Reported by UNO FCU
UNO Federal Credit Union has reported that they were hit by a phishing scam today.
The fraudulent e-mail requests that members visit a link which brings you to a very realistic copy of UNO FCU’s website and “update your personal records.”
UNO FCU has posted a warning on their website alerting their members that they do not solicit members via e-mail.
Phishing is a high-tech scam that uses spam or pop-up messages to deceive unsuspecting consumers into disclosing sensitive information, such as their credit card numbers, checking account information, Social Security number, passwords, etc.
While this particular e-mail appears to be from UNO FCU, similar fraudulent e-mails supposedly from the Credit Union National Association (CUNA), the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), and CU Service Centers (CUSC) have been reported. CUNA, NCUA and CUSC have all issued alerts on their websites. Credit unions that participate in shared branching have also been alerted.
Credit unions are strongly encouraged to warn their members about phishing and how to avoid being hooked by a phishing scam. Most importantly, make sure your members know that they should never respond to e-mails that request them to disclose sensitive information. In addition, members should never click directly on links in an e-mail that requests sensitive information, even if they recognize and trust the address. These links can redirect you to a fake -- though very real looking -- website. Instead, always type the web address directly into your browser's address bar.
